William received his education in schools in Montgomery Co., Pa. & Berkeley Co., Va.
William & Rebecca had their first child while living in Washington Co. Pa., then they moved to Monroe Co., Ohio. They lived in Summit Twp., then in Switzerland Twp., where they lived until 1859. Then they moved to Moundsville, then to Wheeling for a short time & then back to Moundsville, they stayed there until 1869. The name of Elizabethtown was changed to Moundsville in 1860, their first year of residence.
The Ohio valley was getting crowded by the movement west. People were anxious to secure land while it was still available. Several in the Shimp family had moved west and William decided to go too.
They went to Chicage by train, then west as far as the railroad would sell them tickets, the railroad was under construction further west at this time. Their destination was Chariton, Lucas Co., Iowa.
When they arrived in Iowa, William purchased a farm four miles due west of Chariton, and the location could be seen at a great distance because of a tall lone pine tree in the farm yard. He had located close to the market, and railroad, as the public roads were yet to be drafted, and improved.
When they arrived in Chariton, their youngest child was nine and their oldest twenty-five. John was 24, Henry 21, James 19, and William Jr. 14, which provided plenty of man power to run a farm. William lived here about sixteen years, then he retired from farming in 1885, moving into the west part of Chariton, the third ward, where he lived until his death. [NI16459] The Brintons were Quakers who immigrated to America from Staffordshire County, England. In an effort to escape religious persecution, William came to America in the spring of 1684 with his wife and his only living son, William. They settled near what is now New Castle, Delaware, and lived in a cave throughout the first winter. They survived, thanks to gifts of game supplied by the Indians that traversed the route by their shelter. Once the weather cleared, William built the family a log cabin and planted a pear tree as a symbol of a fruitful future. He purchased 50 acres from Thomas King in March of 1686 and 450 acres in October of that same year in Birmingham (Chester Co). ... William and Ann came to the Americas and endured much hardship because as a Quaker, he had lost much of what he owned to the British government. He was again on the unpopular side of religion within seven years of coming to America, as he joined up with the rebellious Quaker, George Keith. This group fractured and broke up after a few years, at which point William and family returned to the Orthodox Quaker church where he was a member in good standing at Concord Monthly Meeting at the time of his death. A biography of Ann, written in part by her husband William, was reprinted in "The Friend," Vol. 33, a Quaker publication. (ancestry.com - Lawrence Pavlowich data)

An interesting family legend for which there is much foundation, is that several years after Augustine Herman left Manhattan he went back to look after the property interests that he retained there and was held as a prisoner on some pretext by Stuyvesant, who had sentenced him to death. A short time before the day fixed for his execution he feigned sickness and asked to exercise his pet horse Gustavus. The animal finely caparisoned, was brought to the fort, and he allayed the guards' suspicions by riding regularly each morning. Finally seeing his opportunity, one day he bolted through a great window over the parapet and leaped fifteen feet to solid earth, swam the North River, ran his horse through New Jersey, and halted on the banks of the Delaware, opposite New Castle, thus escaping death and the Dutch. This romantic and daring feat was painted for Herman by an eminent artist of the day, which canvas was destroyed when the old mansion house and other valuable paintings were burned in 18--. There is, however, extant a copy of a portrait of Augustine and his horse, the famous Gustavus, from whose nostrils the blood is flowing. It is said that Herman never used the animal after its noble flight with him from New York. It was buried on the manor and honored, it is said, with a tombstone, and upon the death of Augustine Herman he was buried between his wife and his faithful horse.

[NI16474] Monocacy and Catoctin, Vol. 2, Wood Families of Woodsboro, pp 223-244
Chapter 5: The Wood Families of Woodsboro, by C.E. Schildknecht with the late Frances Meehan Smith
Assistance with this chapter is acknowledged to C. Dahl Drenning and the late W. Cash Smith of Woodsboro and to Patricia Davis of near Baltimore.
Augustine Ephraim Herrman is the earliest known ancestor of Wood families of Woodsboro, Frederick County. He was born about 1580 probably in Prague, Bohemia, where he was a merchant and councilman. Because he was an ardent Hussite and signed a Protestant document addressed to the Emperor Maximillian in 1618, he was banished. From that date he seems to have disappeared from history, but his widow and famous son Augustine are recorded later as living in Amsterdam, Holland. The presumption is that Augustine Ephraim was killed in one of the many battles occurring in Europe during the second and third decades of the 17th century. He had married about 1600 Beatrice Retel or Redel, daughter of Caspar Retel, a member of a patrician family of Prague.
Children of Augustine Ephraim Herrmann of which we have records were as follows:
(1) Anna, died about 1670, married Dr. George Nicholas Hack of Accomac, Virginia and had sons George and Peter, both born in Accomac; her business abilities helped extricate Augustine from financial failures in New Amsterdam.
(2) Augustine (c 1621-1686) who emigrated to America with the Hacks before 1651. He was a leader at New Amsterdam (later New York City) and founder of Bohemia Manor in Cecil County, Maryland. Through his daughter Francina he was a forebearer of the Wood families of Woodsboro.
AUGUSTINE HERMAN was educated in Holland, where his mother had fled. Augustine was a student of accomplishments; it is said that he could speak German, Dutch, French, Spanish, English and Latin. He signed his name in at least 12 ways, including the Dutch form Augustijn Hermansz. In Amsterdam as a young man he entered the service of the Dutch West India Company, for which he traveled widely, including to Corsica, the Antilles and Brazil. Herman was reputed to have been a part owner of a privateering frigate known as "La Garce," which preyed upon Spanish ships , and to have been one of the leaders in early tobacco trade in Virginia.
Augustine in 1643 or later settled down more or less in New Amsterdam, then only a small town on Manhattan Island. He became a leader of the settlers, who eventually opposed the arrogant ways of the first governor, Peter Stuyvesant. In 1650 Augustine painted a sketch of New Amsterdam said to be the oldest surviving painting of the town. See self-portrait on page 255.
Augustine Herman was sent from New Amsterdam on an expedition to the South River (Delaware) to plant Dutch arms on the land, including the later site of Philadelphia, and to buy lands from the Indians. He became one of the most prosperous merchants and real estate operators on Manhattan Island and lived at the corner of Pine and Pearl Streets. One of his projects was growing indigo experimentally in his garden.
In September 1659 Governor Stuyvesant sent Augustine Herman and Resolved Waldron as ambassadors to visit the governor of Maryland to attempt settlement of disputes over jurisdiction of settlements on the Delware River, including New Amstel (later New Castle).

[NI16477] ancestry.com - Guy Family - Post-em note from Barb Selletti:
William Wood was born in 1624 in St. Nicholas Parish, Nottinghamshire, England and emigrated with his family in 1683. He settled in Darby (now Delaware County), where there was laid out for him 200 acres; and here he and his son, Joseph, established several grist mills. He called his estate "Mountwood" (the site still exists). He owned additional acreage in Upper Darby, Newtown and Easttown townships, and in the Liberty Lands (near Philadelphia). In 1684, 500 acres was surveyed for him in Lower Merion Twp.
William Wood was a man of ability and prominence. His occupation is given as "gentleman." In 1684, William was appointed a Provincial Judge and in the same year, he was made a member of the Governor's Council. He was also Justice of the Peace for Chester County. His untimely death, in 1685, cut short a promising career.
William was married to Susannah Stubbens Markel (b: in England; d: 4 Sep 1689 in Darby, Chester Co., PA). They had the following children:
Joseph (who married Francina Herrman), John (who married Mary Bartram), Susannah (who married George Simcock), Stephen, Jonathan, & Benjamin Wood.

kharbury@macconnect.com writes: "I am a descendant myself of this Joseph WOOD who married Francina HERMAN etc. I have the information on Joseph's father William WOOD, Quaker, who was a personal friend of William PENN and came to Chester Co PA at Penn's invitation. Wm WOOD was a judge there like his son Joseph was for Delaware. ..."

Another ancestry site says that several of Susannah Markel's children by her first husband, John Medford, came to America with her and 2nd husband William Wood.

[NI16491] In German Carl was known as Karul; in England where he completed his education, he was known as Charles Springer. Coming to America he was known as we know him, Charles C. Springer, settling with the Swedes in what was known as Christina, named for the Queen of Sweden; it is now known as Wilmington, Del.
Through his qualifications in education and Christian leadership, he for years was the settlement's principal in school and church.
According to the "Annals of the Swedes on the Delaware," by Rev. John Curtis Clay, rector of Old Swedes Church, Philadelphia PA , 1831-1863, Carl Springer was kidnaped by pirates who brought him to Virginia where he served as a bond servant for five years, after which he joined the Swedish colony in 1681. (I heard that he was kidnapped off the streets of London where he was attending school. (ancestry.com: Spring Nichols: Stille/Springer/Hedges/Eversole/Nichols)

[NI16495] Anders Stille was only one-and-a-half years old when he left Stockholm with his father in 1641. He had already left home at Techoherassi by 1658 when he is shown to be a resident of New Castle in present Delaware. Record of his land transfers is in the Swedish American Genealogist, Vol. VI, Nos. 3 and 4, Sept. and Dec. 1986.
This report says that one of the children of Anders and Anna Stille was Jacob Stille, whose name frequently appears in the records of Holy Trinity Church at Christina, Delaware. He was born 1675-1680 and married by 1710 Rebecca Springer, daughter of Charles Christopherrsson Springer and Maria Hendricksdotter. Jacob was a farmer and for several years a warden of Holy Trinity Church, wrote his will 14 Sept 1771, which was proved 6 Feb. 1774. (ancestry.com: Spring Nichols: Stille/Springer/Hedges/Eversole/Nichols)

An ancestry.com source says he married Anna Pieterson; a geneaology.com source says Gertrude Kyn daughter of Joran Kyn.

[NI16496] This information is from a study written by Peter S. Craig, entitled "Olof Stille in New Sweden - The Stille Family in America 1641-1772."
In the month of March, 1638, Katarina Fleming of Penningby Manor, newly widowed by the death of her husband, Erik Bjelke, wrote to the governor, alerting him that the late husband's former servant, Olof Stille, had broken into Penningby and she therefore demanded that Olof Stille be brought to justice, (This all took place in Sweden.)
(The background of this affair is that Olof had in a spirit of arrogance spoken unseemly words to her Ladyship at the fair in Norrtalje in 1636, besides other transgressions he had previously committed and had been forgiven through the intercession of noble persons. For this behavior, he had been ordered off his (island) farm, Humblo, where his late parents had been living. The two servants who worked for Olof did not leave the farm, however, but stayed there even though Olof was gone.)
On 13 April 1638, he appeared in court and said that he had been drinking in Norratalje, and that he had paid enough fines for his impropriety: a piece of cleared land, the crops on his field, firewood and a Baltic Herring Net, all of which had been taken away from him and in addition he had been in prison twice, but had escaped by himself.
The court agent answered that this had come about because of an inheritance that Olaf had in his possession: and the deceased Lordship had been the guardian on Olof's sister's behalf. But the real reason Olof had been kept in jail was the fact that he refused to leave the farm.
Later one of the servants named Anders was imprisoned in Penningby Manor. This is the record of Olof's adventure:
(translation of record of the Extraordinary Session)
"On 19 March Olof Stille arrived from Norrtalje, having in mind to travel to Vasby, where he had been requested to come. First, however, he went into Jacob of Torpet's place, where he was told that Anders had been locked up. Then he grabbed a wood-axe and said, "I shall get him out, in the name of the bad one." (However he did not have a loaded gun with him; nor did he leave Norrtalje in anger, as he had been accused.) He let himself into Penningby through a secret door, and found the room where Anders was imprisoned, under the very house in which the said Late Lordship lay a corpse. Since the lock was strong, he broke apart the masonry, took away the lock and keeper (worth one daler sylvermynt), took the servant out, gave him the axe and sent him on ahead. When he himself turned from the wall, he bared his sword, which was witnessed by Olof Svensson (who alone was at home in the castle, as the rest of the servant folk were at the census enrollment).
Then, Olof Svensson testified, Olof Stille swept his sword around, uttered foul language and said, "I dare you to come and take me!" Whereupon he fled. The others came home then and wanted to apprehend him, but they were held back because of the risk to their own lives that could involve.
Olof was to have many adventures after he emigrated to Delaware. For the complete booklet (176 pages), send to Peter Stebbins Craig, 3406 Macomb St. NW, Washington DC 20016. (source: ancestry.com - Spring Nichols - Stille/Springer/Hedges/Eversole/Nichols)

[NI16657] Obituary reads: "George Germond of Pierpont dead. Followed his mother, who died five months ago. He had many friends. George Germond of Pierpont will not be forgotten for many years. The boys and girls in their early grades will remember him long for this man who was laid to rest Monday afternoon was on such friendly terms with the little folks that they called to him when they passed the home, "Hello, George!" They will not know the suffering that he endured when he smiled and acted cheery, and no one except the bereaved wife conceived of the agony he had been suffering during the past two years. George Germond died Saturday morning. He had kept up well and only two or three days before his death he walked about the home with the help of Mrs. Germond. He was born February 28th, 1852 at Conneaut, Ohio. He was a small child when his parents moved to the Anson Leonary farm in southeast Pierpont. His life has been pent in and around Pierpont. Twenty-eight years ago he married Mrs. Ella Aldrich, who survives. Mrs. Aldrich had three daughters who are Mrs. Glenn Partch, Mrs. Claude Maloney and Mrs. Art Moore. The deceased was a kind father to these step daughters, and the feeling of sadness was as keen in his passing as that felt over the death of many an own father. The funeral service was held Monday afternoon, and the remains were laid to rest in the Pierpont Cemetery, Rev. R.E. Benjamin of Conneaut, who knew the deceased for many years preached the funeral sermon and was well able to interpret the quite and friendly life of the departed. Floral offerings were made by the Sunday school, and by relative and friends. The deceased leaves a nephew, Charles Germond of Conneaut and two cousins, Mrs. Jane Wheeler of Pierpont, and Williard Davis of Kinsman, as well as the widow and three step daughters. His mother died only five months ago at an advanced age. It can be said of him truthfully that his word as as good as a bond, and that his passing removes from Pierpont one of the good, sincere and kind members of the community."
