Notes

[NI09008] By 1840 Hannah, with a number of her younger children, had moved to Union Twp., Delaware Co., Indiana. Here, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews, she lived out her interesting life. Only after all her children were married and settled did she marry again. This was AUG 9, 1850, at which time she married Elder Benjamin BOWMAN (2-4-1785 - 2-21-1856). The "History of the Mississinewa Church of the Brethren" by Ralph G. RARICK, 1917, says of her: "She was truly a mother in Israel, never weary of extending the hand of charity, and administering to the needy." From 1850 to the date of her death, NOV 18, 1862, she was known as "Granny BOWMAN" by her neighbors and fellow adherents in the "Old Church on the River." She is buried next to Elder Benjamin BOWMAN in the Union Cemetery, Union Twp., Delaware Co., Indiana.

[NI09010] From Richard Warren Davis in vol. II of "Emigrants, Refugees and Prisoners," pp. 206-207: Jacob Hershberger, b. c 1698, probably Alsace. He died in 1762 in Cocolico twp, Lancaster Co PA. He wrote his will 3 Nov 1762 and it was proved 20 Dec 1762 [Will A-251, Lancaster]. He was married to Catherina. He left money to the poor of his congregation to be distributed by Abraham Brubaker and John Tschantz, both Mennonite. The executors of his estate were his "loving friends" Jacob Erb and Abraham Brubaker. He bought land in Cocalico twp on 18 Nov 1736 from John White [Deed K-8, Lancaster]. He bought more land 7 Sep 1748 from Maria Katherina Ensminger [Deed A-108, Lancaster]. In a deed his children are listed in this order: Jacob, John, Joseph, Abraham, Isaac, Christian, Christina wife of Daniel Reasor, and Anna wife of Jacob Hoover. He was taxed at Cocalico in 1751. He is probably the Mennonite Jacob Hersberger who was a weaver living at Boehl in the Pfalz in 1724 [Palatine Mennonite Census Lists, 1664-1793, by Hermann and Gertrud Guth, p. 27: Hans Jakob Hirschberger, well-to-do linen weaver, listed in Boehl]. In the 1756 tax rate for Cocalico he was called a weaver. He came to Pennsylvania between 1724 and 1736. He probably arrived about 1726.

Emigrants vol. I p. 49, 1726: Jacob Eshbarger, who Davis suggests might be Eshbacher, could be our Jacob Hershberger. He was listed in the 1727 Lancaster PA (then Conestoga Twp, Chester Co) tax record.

[NI09221] Marvin was named after James Marvin, whom his grandmother Polly Bill married after his grandfather Elihu Burrington died.

Marvin's family lived in Cattarus Co. NY as of the 1850 census, when Marvin was 13. They later moved to Kent Co. MI.

Marvin volunteered in the Union Army Jan. 4, 1864 at Grand Rapids MI for 3 years. By June 1864 he was in action and wounded at Lays Ferry GA. He was hospitalized near Reseca GA and in August 1864 moved to a hospital in Murfreesboro. He was discharged at Murfreesboro because of serious back and elbow injuries.

Marvin liked the territory around Murfreesboro so much that in 1884 he moved his family to Henry Co. (TN). Moving along with them was his good friend Albert Nathaniel Cameron and his family. They used covered wagons for travelling across country. Marvin bought farms for his entire family between Reynoldsburg Road and VanDyke Station. He built Eureka School on his farm; it was called Yankee school by native-born Tennesseans.

The Lima News, undated article (1957?), "Young Bluffton Quintet Interested in Science" by Pat Collar, with picture captioned "A lot of studying -- When it's homework time each evening at the James Jordan home in Bluffton, five Jordan youths pick up books relating to science and start studying. Doing some serious reading are, left to right, Sallie, Walter, Carol, Charles and James Jordan."
Bluffton -- Five budding young high school scientists dig into their homework each evening in the collegiate town of Bluffton. Sallie, James, Carol, Charles and Walter, children of Mr. and Mrs. James Jordan, 167 Riley, Bluffton, are students at Bluffton High School. Sallie is a senior, James Jr., a junior and Carol, Charles and Walter, the triplets, are sophomores.
Sallie is taking her fourth year of science at school. This year she is studying physics. She would like to be a laboratory chemist someday. The testing of soil appeals to her.
James Jr. is studying chemistry. He has set his sights on being a research chemist.
The triplets, who are anything but carbon copies, are planning toward futures in medicine and engineering. Carol hopes to become a doctor, perhaps a psychiatrist. Walter is looking toward a career in aeronautical engineering. Charles, who is the least certain of the five as to his career, is thinking about the field of engineering. The triplets are members of the biology class at Bluffton High School this year.
Proud of Family -- Mrs. Jordan beams with pride as she talks about her industrious family. Her children's interest in the field of science can no doubt be accredited to her careful guidance. She relates that she too had an interest in science as a youngster.
When the five Jordan youths were just beginning their explorations into the wide open spaces of the field of science, they used home chemistry sets. Now they stay after school to practice their experiments.
Although the Jordans' prodigies are deeply interested in science they are by no means preoccupied by it. They live well rounded lives and are a benefit to the community in many ways. Both Sallie and Carol are members of the Girls Athletic Association and the Tri-Hi-Y. Sallie has been selected as a delegate to the model legislature April 19-21 at Columbus by the Tri-Hi-Y. She is also a member of the Library Club.
Scout Members -- Carol is a Senior Girl Scout and is a member of the senior planning board of Fort Amanda Council. She helps at the Bluffton hospital as a part of her Girl Scout service work.
James Jr. is an Eagle Scout and is president of the Boy Scout Explorer Post. He is the center on the Bluffton football team and also plays on the basketball team. All three boys are members of the Explorer Scouts.
Sallie, Carol, Walter and Charles are members of the high school chorus.
Presently, all five are working on science projects to take to Bowling Green State University for "science day."
James Jordan Sr. owns and operates the Jordan Repair Service to provide for his family. He sells and services welding equipment. Mrs. Jordan does the office work in addition to making a home for the busy family. The entire family attends the E and R United Church of Christ and all five of the Jordan youths sing in the choir and belong to the Youth Fellowship.

[NI09416] Lima News, Tuesday, Oct. 1, 1957 - Relaxed Home Life Aids Bluffton's Only Triplets, by Mrs. Carl Smucker, Lima Citizen Correspondent, with picture captioned "Scouts Walter, Charles and Carol Happy Trio"
Bluffton -- Bluffton's only set of triplets, Carol, Walter and Charles Jordan, are having the good fortune of growing up in a home with a relaxed atmosphere where each member of the family is encouraged to follow his own hobbies and interests.
These three busy teenagers, 14-1/2 years of age and freshmen in Bluffton High School, keep up a fast pace, each carrying five subjects in school and keeping up with scouting and church activities.
Since so many of the every day activities of the Jordan triplets send each one going his own separate way, the family plans projects on Saturdays and Sundays to keep the family group together. Last Saturday, Carol, Walter and Charles each planted a little bush at the edge of the large Jordan lot on Riley St. Large holes had to be dug for this project, which should prove to be a lasting one in the lives of these young people.
The three are very active in Scouting. Carol, a member of Bluffton's first Senior Girl Scout troop, has been one of the girls who has done volunteer work in the local hospital this past summer. This may have been one of the factors which has made Carol, at this point, decide she would like to be a doctor.
The Jordan family moved to Bluffton when Carol was in the second grade and it was the first year the village had established its Girl Scouting activities.
Walter and Charles are both Star Boy Scouts and have only a few merit badges remaining until they will become Life Scouts. They have had their share of hikes to "fox hill," and overnight camp-outs in both summer and winter. Another very difficult task was the cycling merit badge which involves a number of short biking trips and then one long one.
The natural inclination of the three Jordans is towards science, each being intensely interested in experiments of various sorts. In trying to determine what has brought about the scientific inclinations, Mrs. Jordan was quite sure that it must have come from her "side of the house," but immediately several of the children pointed out that on the Jordan side there are doctors and chemists too. Mrs. Jordan was a Willauer and was born in Lima.
The Bluffton High School honor roll usually names Walter, Carol and Charles during each six weeks period as well as James Jordan, a brother who is a sophomore and Sallie, older sister who is a junior. An older brother, Richard, is in the military police branch of the service at Ft. Gordon, Ga.
The family goes to the Evangelical and Reformed Church where the young people assume active rolls in the youth groups.
Jordan is owner and manager of a welding equipment shop which serves northwestern Ohio both in selling welding equipment and in repairing it. His wife is the secretary and bookkeeper, which makes the business strictly a "family affair."
Mrs. Jordan says laughingly that her hobby is "raising children." The Jordans already had a one-year-old son, a two -year-old daughter and an eight-year-old son when the triplets arrived on the scene. She has always been very eager for the children to have a good education.
When the triplets were a year old the family moved to Riga, Mich. They began first grade in a school where the first four grades were together and the last four in another room in a more or less "country school" setup. Mrs. Jordan feels that there are many values ... [article cut off]

[NI09487] William McCreery, farmer, PO Ada, was born Dec 12, 1824, in Carroll County, Ohio, and is the son of Thomas and Christina (Shuster) McCreery. His father, of Irish descentm was a native of Virginia, and came to Carroll County in 1811. His mother was of German lineage and a native of Pennsylvania. ... In 1847 he married Catharine Wingate, a daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Tressel) Wingate, both of English descent. (History of Hardin County, p. 1013)

[NI09501] I am including this William in my Beckett lineage as possibly Humphrey's father. It is believed that Humphrey was a descendant of William & Sarah (Jennings) Beckett who settled in Gloucester Co NJ. If William and Sarah were married in 1734, it is more likely that Humphrey (born 1782) was their grandson rather than their son. Irving Pierce (I.P.) Beckett in 1949 wrote a family book claiming that William and Sarah had four sons, Josiah, John, Peter and William. Their son William supposedly had a son William who married Rachel. From what I have seen (census records, tombstone, children's marriage records), the William who married Rachel went by the name of Humphrey.

There was a William Beckett in Frederick Co MD, who was listed in the 1790 census, also placed in Frederick Co in 1778, Maryland Oaths of Fidelity. I have not been able to find out anything further about this William. It is possible he is the missing link between Humphrey and William & Sarah, and so I have included him for the time being.

William Beckett, 1790 census, Frederick Co MD, 2-3-3: 2 males over 16, 3 males under 16, 3 females. My rough estimate is that William was born about 1745-1750.

[NI09728] http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/archives/cherokee/1904/bios/laruetp.html:
T. P. LaRUE, president of the First National Bank of Columbus, and one of the leading capitalists of Cherokee County, was born in 1844 in Morrow Country, Ohio, and is a son of Aaron LaRue.

The LaRue family is of French extraction and the American branch was instituted by Huguenot refugees who became prominent in the State of Virginia and, later, in Ohio. Aaron LaRue was born in Virginia in 1800, and died in Iowa in 1885. He took his family to Iowa in 1856, and settled on a farm in the vicinity of Vinton, in Benton County.

T. P. LaRue was reared on his father's farm in Iowa. He possessed the business capacity which led him to invest his small capital to the best advantage, and to turn it over until he had secured enough to establish himself in a private banking business. This he accomplished in 1877 with means he had earned himself, for Mr. LaRue is an example of a self-made man. He continued in the private banking business at Scranton, Iowa, until 1886, when he moved to Cherokee County, Kansas, subsequently purchasing the Columbus Bank, a private institution, of which Jarvis, Conklin & Company, were the owners. This bank which was founded in 1882 by Dwight & Schott, had been disposed of to Jarvis, Conklin & Company, and was sold to Mr. LaRue in the fall of 1887.

In 1902 the institution became the First National Bank of Columbus, which is capitalized at $50,000, and has about $5,000 in undivided profits. Mr, LaRue is now in active charge of the bank as its president, and the other officers are,—Isaac Wright, vice-president; H. A. LaRue, cashier; and A. M. Albin, assistant cashier. The success of the institution has been assured ever since Mr. LaRue took charge, and the business has continued to expand until now it is rated, not only as one of the safest, but also as one of the most important financial concerns of the State.

When Mr. LaRue came to Cherokee County, he brought considerable capital with him, which, under his good management, has many times increased. He owns between 4,000 and 5,000 acres of land in Cherokee County and is the largest tax payer. He also hes property located in other states, and owns stock in several other banks. His farming land he rents, devoting the greater part of hes time to the management of his numerous investments.

Mr. LaRue married Elizabeth Hutton, who was born in Ohio, and taken to Iowa when a child by her parents. Six children were born to them, four in Iowa, and two (twins) in Kansas. Mrs LaRue and the younger children are enjoying the comforts of the beautiful winter home at Los Angeles, California.

During the Civil War, Mr. LaRue served for 18 months as a non- commissioned officer in Company G, 2nd Reg., Iowa Vol. Inf., and saw active service during his time, but returned uninjured. Politically, he has always been a strong supporter of the Republican party, but has never accepted preferment of any kind. Fraternally, he is a Royal Arch Mason, and belongs also to the Grand Army of the Republic. In religious views, he favors Catholic institutions.

Without doubt, Mr. LaRue is one of the most widely known men in business and financial circles in this section of Kansas, and he fills a prominent position as the president of oldest banking institution in Cherokee County.

[NI10028] From Hardin County OH Biographical Sketches p. 862:
Homer P. Stevenson, farmer, P.O. Silver Creek, was born in Greene County OH, May 31, 1816. He is a son of William and Margaret (Hillis) Stevenson, natives of Virginia. His father's parents removed to Tennessee. His father came, in 1800, to Xenia, Ohio, and afterward settled on a purchase of land of 100 acres on the Little Miami. He was among the earliest pioneers and was County Assessor for one term and Justice of the Peace. He served in the War of 1812, and died in Dec. 1826; his wife died of cholera in 1848.
Homer is next to the youngest of five children, and was reared on a farm until 17 years of age. In 1829, 1830 and 1833, he came to this county, remaining about two months each time, and returned in 1835 and resided here until 1840, working for his brother Samuel. He bought 80 acres of woodland in 1842, and settled on it in 1844. He erected a log cabin, and lived in it until 1862, when he built his present house. He aided in the building of the schoolhouse in District No. 3. He has since purchased 70 acres of land, and has cleared and improved his whole farm. He married, Nov. 26, 1840, Miss Mary A., daughter of Daniel Hullinger. To this union there are nine children, six living, viz. Lewis M., Rachel H. (wife of Leander King), Elizabeth (wife of Albert Ranney), Perry H., David P., and Maggie; Bartley E., Presten W. and James U. are deceased.
Bartley E. enlisted July 28, 1861 in Company D, 34th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He served in the Army of West Virginia and veteranized. He was killed at the Battle of Winchester Sept. 19, 1864.
Lewis M. enlisted in Nov. 1861 in Company ----, 82nd O.V.I. He was wounded at the second battle of Bull Run, and afterward discharged through disability.
Mr. Stevenson is a Republican in politics. He was Township Trustee for one year, and has served 27 years as Justice of the Peace, and was re-elected to that office April 2, 1883.

Matilda and Hiram Tharp moved to Oregon, and John lived on the homeplace in Wetzel County - Fallen Timber Ridge or Hickory Knob.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvwetzel/grant/allen_cemetery.htm - Allen Cem. has a Nettie V. Beckett b 1901 d 1940. John & Dorcas and son Asa are buried here, so this may be a daughter of John & Dorcas, or wife of Asa.

Per Angela Beckett McKeen [angelamckeen@excite.com], June 25, 2002, responding to my query about Encil on a Wetzel County (WV) message board (ancestry.com):
My Pap, Encil Berle Beckett, was born April 22, 1910 in Michigan, I believe. He was the son of John Emanuel Beckett (b. 31 Jan 1880; d. Jan 1973) and Dorcas Elizabeth Mayfield. Encil married Helen Kathleen Showalter and they had three children: Donald Keith Beckett, David Robert Beckett (my dad), and Susan Dale Beckett Allen. Pap died on February 20, 1985. Gram (Helen Showalter Beckett) died on May 10, 1999.
Uncle Asa (everyone pronounced Acie) Roman Beckett was a brother of Encil and Cleve's. He was born on July 5, 1907 and died in 1937.
Uncle Cleve also died young as the result of an automobile accident in Gobles, Michigan, though I don't know the date.
