Undated article from The Lima News (1959?): Son Like Father Directs Enterprising Business, by Bob Pendergast (with picture of Charles Crockett III captioned "Business Across the U.S. for Lima's Charles Crockett III)
The Crocketts of Lima, kin of frontiersman Davy Crockett, have followed the path of their forebear in at least one respect -- they remain "deep in the hearts of their countrymen," or rather countrywomen, in the Lima family's case.
It was in 1923 that Charles Crockett loaned his son, Charles Jr., the necessary cash to establish his own business. The father-son sponsored business continued from that date on and in 1954 it fathered a second father-son business.
The Oriental Rug Co. was born in a small building on Wayne street, its purpose to weave and sell rugs and carpets. The process was for the purchaser to send to Oriental Rug old rags and carpets ... Oriental's workers would then reprocess the material and weave a new and striking rug or carpet for the customer.
This business, begun in 1923, grew in size and stature and today functions as a supplier of rug-making equipment and rug and carpet yarns and material. Rug manufacturing was discontinued six years ago.
In 1954 Charles Jr. opened the purse strings and sponsored a new division of the corporation for his son Charles III. Charles III and his wife operate House of Gifts ... now a division of the parent organization.
House of Gifts, like Oriental Rugs, is a fascinating and unusual business. Both businesses list customers who live far distant from Limaland. The parent organization has customers in all 48 states, Canada, and several foreign countries.
The original business grew beyond the bounds of the Wayne Street location and was moved into its present quarters on Union street in 1925. It was incorporated in 1928.
Richard Waters has been one of the oldest and most faithful employees of Oriental Rugs Inc. He is the company's general manager and has held that position for almost all the 25 years with the company.
House of Gifts has a branch operation at Livonia, Michigan and employs 1500 salesladies in nine states. More than 150 of these ladies gathered in Lima yesterday for their annual convention. The session was a lively affair, being topped off by a barbecue at Springbrook Gardens.
The item which House of Gifts revolves around takes us to the modern way of performing an ancient art known as embroidery. Instead of needle and thread and gifted hand, today's hobbyist finds the printed material is embroidered with color, all the myriad hues of the rainbow, a all come from a specially constructed stylus.
It functions much on the order of a ball point pen and places color-fast dyes just where and in what quantity the crafts-woman wants.
It's a remarkable new development in the do-it-yourself field, the brain child of a former DuPont engineer. He developed his idea, set up a company, sold out to the Edison Company, and they in turn made the company available to the employees ... so today, the Tri Chem Co. of West Orange, N.J., is wholly employee owned. It sells products to the House of Gifts.
The color pen permits a hobbyist to follow set patterns of designs or to use his initiative to the inth degree. You can use the colors on most any material, wood, glass or metal -- even on paper or plastic.
Thus it is that here in Limaland we have two father-son-sponsored businesses that involve two fathers and two sons yet only three people, since the late Charles Crockett never went into the business.
If it's confusing, don't pay any heed. After all, what we started to say was that the Crocketts of Lima are operators of ... business that revolves ... series of unique ... (bottom right corner cut off)

[NI08156] I don't believe Sarah Emeline was a daughter of John & Mary. In 1840 John & Mary had one daughter age 5-10, which would have been Martha; they had a daughter Sarah Catharine born 1846, and it's not likely that they would have given two daughters the first name Sarah. In the 1850 and 1860 censues, Sarah Emeline is not listed in their household.

I originally had John C. Wingate in the family of Samuel Berton Wingate and Sarah Tressel, but there is a conflict between his birth year (1818) and their marriage date (1824). I think it is more likely he was the eldest son of Isaac Wingate and Ursula Crist. (6/2001)

[NI08216] French & Indian War Records from 1755 to 1762 lists this James Hadsell serving on active duty as follows: on the rolls of the Connecticut men; in the campaign of 1757 he served with the men from Farmington, in Capt. Pettibone's Co., at Fort Edwards in Allarrman for 17 days; in the campaign of 1758 he enlisted 4-18-1758 and served to 11-14-1758 in the 10th Co., 1st Reg. under Capt. Lee; in the campaign of 1760 he served in the 7th Co., 2nd Reg. under Capt. Lewis.
Copper was discovered in the 18th century, through green-colored water flowing from a spring on the farm of this James Hadsell. The following quotation is from an old history of Bristol, Conn., entitled "In Olden Times" at New Cambridge as it was first called, describing a picture of James Hadsell's place:
"Outside the Skibbereen bars or entrance to the copper mine the road turns to the south for a short distance. At the bend facing the east, the last of the three larger houses built by James Hadsell and his son James Jr. stood for many years." On page 228 is a map locating Hadsell's Copper Shop, with the notation, "Blacksmith Hadsell worked the mine smelting the oard in his forge," and also locating "James Hadsell's Sr. place."
The will of this James Hadsell was probated at Bristol 9-9-1805. The following quotations from it are interesting:
"In the name of God, Amen. I, James Hadsell of Bristol in the County of Hartford, Conn., although laboring at present under some indisposition of body, yet being of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding, through the mercy of God, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following:
"First and principally I resign my soul with the utmost humility into the hand of Almighty God, my creator, humbly hoping for a blessed immortality through the merits and mediation of my blessed Savior and Redeemer Jesus Christ; and my body I desire may be decently buried at the descretion of my executors, that I shall in this testament hereafter name; and as for such temporal estate as the Lord in his great goodness and mercy hath entrusted me to be the steward of:
"I give and bequith to my dear and beloved wife Hulda, the use and improvements of one-third part of my estate I die possessed of, during her natural life." The rest he distributes to the following named children: "To my daughters, Ruth, Mary, Hulda and Rebeckah, I also give and bequith to James and my other five sons, John, Mark, Ira, Luke and Dan the remainder of my estate."
Mark and Ira are appointed executors, and an inventory includes, "The Dwelling House, Oxen, Cows, Sheep, Shotgun, Saddle Bags, The Blacksmith Shop, and the farm." (Hadsell-Hodsoll pp 128-130)
James Hadsell's last will was posted on Hadsell genforum Sep 6, 2000 by Wendy (millerw@clark.net), including: To my son James seventeen dollars, to my daughter Mary thirty three dollars. Distribution of the Estate lists Huldah, Mark and Ira as Executors and a Lydia Hadsell as a witness.

[NI08219] 4 TIMOTHY2 WILCOXSON (William1) was born about 1637. Winthrop, in 1660, called him of Stratford, aged twenty-three, and mentioned that his mother was the wife of William Hayden of Windsor. In 1658 he called him aged twenty. He was a deacon in the church at Stratford. He married, December 28, 1664, Johanna, daughter of John Birdsey, Senior, of Stratford. She died in August, 1713. He died at Stratford, January 13, 1713, the record adding, "Apparently the date should be 1710-1." The inventory of his estate is dated February 9, 1710-1. A record dated October 7, 1713, shows that his widow, Johanna, had died without completing the administration of her husband's estate, and Robert Walker and Joseph Hawley were appointed administrators. The will of Johanna, widow of Timothy Wilcoxson, dated August 4, 1713, names grandchild, Phebe Fairchild, the daughter of the testatrix's son-in-law, Joseph Fairchild, "late of Stratford dec'd;" granddaughter, Sarah Fairchild; daughters (not named); and gives residue to children of Joseph Fairchild and Joanna, his wife, both deceased. (Wilcoxson-Wilcox, Webb and Meigs Families p. 23)

[NI08224] There were many sailors in the Hodsoll family, both in England and America. James Hodsoll (1669-1709), Commander of his Majesty's ship the Squirrel, was the son of a Capt. John Hodsoll of Ash, Kent. In the will of James Hodsoll is the following: "Unto my nephew James Hodsoll, son of my nrother William, deceased, I give all such wages and table money as shall be due him for the time he shall be with me as a volunteer on her Majesty's ship, Squirrel, aforesaid." This will was probated March 18, 1710, and this young man, James, undoubtedly shows up in New London, Connecticut, in 1721, and becomes the father of the James, James, James Hadsell, so prolific in America. This Captain James returns to England and either is lost at sea or dies. (Hadsell-Hodsoll p. 28)
The land records show this James Hodsoll buying and selling many parcels of land in New London, Saybrook and Killingsworth [CT]. On January 1, 1736 he sold for 172 pounds current money all his land and "mansion house thereon" in New London to Joshua Hempstead, and this is the last record we have found anywhere of this James Hodsoll. Tradition handed down related that he went to England in that year to settle an estate, and was lost at sea. So firmly was this believed that almost a hundred years later his descendants made efforts to find his inheritance. (Ibid, pp 127-128)

William sailed from London, England on Apr 2, 1635/6 in the ship 'PLANTER' with his wife Margaret (age 24) and his son John (age 2). They arrived May 26, 1635/6 at Concord, in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He became a freeman that same year. He removed to Stratford CT and was listed as a linen-weaver in 1639. In 1647 he was made Deputy to the Connecticut Legislature.

We know William died in 1652 because there is record of the inventory of his will on June 16, 1652.

See "A Preliminary Report on the Descendants of William Wilcoxson" by Thomas Wilcox.

WILLIAM WILCOXSON, of Stratford, Connecticut, was born at St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, in 1601. On April 2, 1635-6, he sailed from London on the ship, "Planter," with his wife, Margaret, aged twenty-four, and their son, John, aged two, arriving at Concord, in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, May 26, and the same year became a freeman of the Colony. He removed to Stratford in 1639, and was a Deputy from that town to the Connecticut Legislature, which met at Hartford, in 1647. His will, dated May 29, 1651, named his wife, Margaret; his eldest son; "the rest of my sons;" his daughters; and bequeathed forty pounds to the church at Concord. It named as overseers for the distribution of his estate, Adam Blackman, Thomas Thornton, Philip Grove and William Beardsley. The inventory was dated June 16, 1652.

William Wilcoxson died at Stratford in 1652. His widow, Margaret, married William Hayden of Windsor, Connecticut. An agreement made by his children and heirs was dated October 22, 1668, the heirs being as follows: the widow, Margaret, "now Hayden;" Henry and Elizabeth Stiles; Daniel and Hannah Hayden; John and Sarah Meigs; and John, Joseph, Phebe, Timothy, Johanna, Samuel and "Obadias" (Obadiah) Wilcoxson. [NI08369] For now, this is a guess that John Palmer born 1810-1815 is the son of John Palmer and Ruth Truax. We do know that Lydia Palmer and her siblings Jacob and Ruth are listed as heirs in the Truax-Pittman records. That would indicate that Lydia is a granddaughter of John & Ruth rather than of Peter Palmer and Mary Winland, for whom I've found no connection to the Pittmans or Truaxes. Monroe County, Ohio books (found at the DAR Library) contain summaries of legal proceedings involving, I believe, the contesting of a will. I am in the process of making a complete search of these records and untangling the family relations contained therein by comparing the names to existing Truax and Pittman records.

For now, I am including in my genealogy a lineage on my father's side back to Philippe duTrieux who married Sarah LaRue, sister to Peter LaRue who is my mother's ancestor. I have not completed my search of the Monroe County books, so I can't claim this lineage with certainty. Based on my findings so far, I think it's a strong possibility that Lydia Palmer was a descendant of Philippe and Sarah (LaRue) duTrieux.

[NI08370] Not yet proven that Peter Palmer is father of John Palmer. Peter Palmer was early in Center Twp (see below) and is listed near Lydia Palmer in the 1850 census for Sunsberry [sic] Twp. But there is a John Palmer who was among the early settlers of Sunsbury Twp, and a David Palmer was one of the first officers of Sunsbury Twp.

1820 census for Monroe Co, David Palmer is living near Benjamin Truax, Jacob Pittman, Joseph Pittman, Elias Pittman, Catherine Truax, Abram Truax, Jacob Truax, William Pittman, Elias Pittman, John Palmer, and Samuel Truax. David is 26-45, John is 45+. On the previous page is John Truax, Samuel Truax, William Pittman, and Jacob Truax. Another John Palmer (45+ with one male 16-26) is on another page with Richard Truax, Samuel Truax, Philip Truax, Bethena Pittman, Elias Pittman, and Jacob Pittman.

Center Township - The points at which the first settlements in this Township were made cannot be ascertained. The first settlement is believed to have been made on Sunfish Creek by John Baker. It is believed he settled on the farm owned so long afterward by Isaac Barrett and later owned by Hayes Burkhead. Several improvements were made between the years 1805 and 1812. These improvements were made by John Baker, John Winland, Levin Okey, Peter Palmer and other settlers such as Elias and Joseph Jeffries, Jessie and Abraham Jackson, William Griffith, and Martin Baker.

Sunsbury Township was organized on June 24, 1819. It lies on a high ridge dividing the waters of Captina Creek on the North and Sunfish Creek on the South. The following were among the first settlers of Sunsbury Township: Abner Barrett; John Linn; Citizen Beall; George Stewart; Robert Wilson; John Nelson; George Decker; John Palmer; Elias Pitman; Samuel Mellott; Henry Smith; Samuel Starr; Noah Stewart; Jesse Morris; and the Trembly family.

[NI08388] Isaac and Mary came to Ohio between 1835, when son John was born in PA, and 1839, when son William was born in Ohio.

Isaac and Mary moved from Berks Co to Stark Co OH, Tuscarawas Twp, betw 1836-1839, removing to DeKalb Co IN abt 1849 when he settled on a track of unimproved land in the southwest quarter of Sec. 4, Smithfield Twp, which he improved and made his home until his death. (History of DeKalb County) (Gramling-Hornberger Genealogy p. 11)

Stark County, where Isaac and Mary Gramling brought their young family of Henry, Susan, Richard, Peter and John about 1837-1838, was a beautifully wooded, hilly area in the northern part of the Tuscarawas Valley where they lived for about 10 years...
For undisclosed reasons but probably because Isaac was a farmer and preferred a less industrial location, the family moved on to DeKalb Co about 1849, with the older and new Ohio-born children: William, Mary Ann and Franklin. Henry, having recently married, remained in Ohio and joined the family in DeKalb County the following year, as did Isaac Hornberger, Mary's brother.
