Schweitzer genforum post by Richard K. Konkel, May 10, 2002:
There is some additional information on Peter Schweitzer who died in 1798 in Brecknock Township, Berks County, PA. I believe that he is the son of an Andreas Schweitzer who died about 1772 in neighboring Brecknock Township, Lancaster County. Andreas Schweitzer left a German language will. He must have been a widower, as no wife is named. He names sons Peter, Melchior and Frederick (there may be others I am doing this from memory).
Peter's wife was Elisabeth Hoschar, not Heffelfinger. Her German tombstone still stands in the church yard of Alleghenyville Lutheran Church in Brecknock Township. The stone reads "Elisabeth Schweitzer, nee Hoschauer, wife of Peter Schweitzer, born March 1741, died 15 Dec 1838 age 97 years."
Elisabeth was the daughter of Johann Theobald Hoschar and wife Anna Barbara Wieder who emigrated from Altwiller, Sarre-Union, Lorraine, France in 1749 on the Ship Phoenix. Details of their family are given in Annette Kunselman Burgert's "Eighteenth Century Emigrants from the Northern Alsace to America."
I descend from Peter Schweitzer and Elisabeth Hoschar's daughter Elizabeth who married George Weidner.

John and Jonathan Zerbe bought land in Cumru Township, March 4, 1764 (Deed Book 7, p. 4, Berks County). April 1, 1777, Jonathan Zerbe deeded 50 acres of land to John Zerbe; March 18, 1777, John and Jonathan Zerbe sold the land, 210 acres and allowances, to George Plankenbiller (Deed Book 7, p. 5).
George(1) Kohl m. Eva, da. of John Zerbe; he kept the Angelica hotel and here John Zerbe and wife died. John Zerbe, a miller, built the old mill, part of which is still standing near the addition built by George(2) Kohl.
The children of John and Catharine Zerbe were: Eva, wf. of George Kohl; Jacob, John, David, Elizabeth, Anna Maria, b. January 12, 1783; Susanna Christina, b. March 25, 1776.
The heirs are mentioned in his will. (Abstract of Berks County Wills, Vol. 2, 1798-1825, Gen. Soc., Phila.)

[NI07147] I haven't conclusively shown a relationship between John Tyler and Rachel. Rachel was born about 1788. There is a record of the marriage of John Tyler and Catharine Harrison in Maryland Marriages 1778-1800 (F180.B383), p 233, Frederick Co: Dr. John Tyler m Apr 18, 1787 Catharine Harrison. This was taken from Frederick County Marriage Licenses, 1778-1800, copied from the originals at the courthouse, and published in the DAR Magazine, vol 85.

In 1790 (1790 Maryland census, p 68), Dr. John Tyler had in his household 1 male (himself), 3 females (his wife and 2 daughters?), and 4 slaves. There is also in Frederick Co. (p 69) William Beckett with 2 males (himself and a son over 16 years), 3 sons under 16 years, and 3 females (his wife and 2 daughters). I believe this William is Humphrey's father.

So we have a marriage record of John Tyler and Catharine Harrison in 1787 in Frederick MD, and in 1790 John Tyler is listed with his wife and 2 daughters (that's my assumption), one of whom could be Rachel. John and Catharine are buried in the cemetery at All Saint's Protestant Episcopal Church in Frederick. I have been unable as yet to find a birth record for Rachel or her sister.

John Tyler was born in Prince George's Co MD. He came to Fredericktown prior to 1798 and established a medical practice there. In 1798 his younger brother William moved to Fredericktown and, after finishing his education, studied medicine under his brother. There is a paragraph on Dr. John Tyler in the History of Frederick County MD, p 563, which closes with "he died unmarried." This is obviously an error, as the death date given is the same as that of Dr. John Tyler in the All Saint's Parish records, which records also contain the death of Catharine Tyler, wife of Dr. John Tyler. [include paragraph] According to this history, he was the first oculist in America.

His tombstone is inscribed: "To the memory of John Tyler, a distinguished Physician and Surgeon, who was born on the 29th of June 1763 and died Oct 15, 1841." Catharine's inscription: "Catharine Contee, wife of Dr. John Tyler died Sep 17, 1831 aged 61 years. This tribute to worth and virtue is erected by her affectionate and afflicted husband."

Not sure about this Contee - marriage record says Catharine Harrison. But there was a Contee in PG Co:

1088 - Jacob Hesler, 30, carpenter, real estate: 1000, born Ohio; Nancy, 23; Lucinda, 4; Leonard, 2/12, born Aug; Jacob Leckrone, 16, carpenter, born Pa.

Daniel Leckrone was born Feb 14, 1827, died 1908 Perry Co OH, md. Mar 18, 1847 Sarah Shrider 1828-1902. Daniel was a son of John Leckrone and his second wife Nancy Mumma. A daughter of John Leckrone by his first marriage was Catharine who married Jacob's brother Solomon Helser. Jacob Leckrone, in the household of Jacob and Lucinda, above, was born June 1, 1833, a son of John Leckrone by his third wife Nancy Franks. (source: Genealogy of the George Muma Family, Westmoreland Co PA, p. 156)

It's probable that both Jacob and Nancy died by 1860, as Lucinda is listed in the household of her uncle Samuel in 1860.

1910 Ohio census, Allen Co, Jackson Twp, ED 8 (image 9) - lists Harvey age 9 and Helen age 9. I'm assuming they're twins.

[NI07360] She is the widow of Michael Archdalon.

[NI07369] In the 1850 VA census for Rockbridge Co, Northeast District, p. 397, Benjamin and Jane Larew are listed with Adaline Best, 34, Sarah E. (Best?), 10, Jacob L. (Best?), 7, and William A. Larew, 21. I'm guessing that Adaline is a daughter of Sally Larew, Benjamin's sister, and John Best. Are the children Adaline's? Was she unmarried?

Adaline is also enumerated in Augusta Co, 2nd District, p. 318 (end of the page).

[NI07374] Helen Silvey's site says this Jacob Larew died in 1836 in Augusta Co VA. But there is a Jacob Larew, age 57, in Rockbridge Co VA in the 1850 census. He is listed 10 pages from Benjamin Larew. I believe the Jacob in the census must be Benjamin's brother Jacob.

[NI07381] The name is given as Standlee in Abraham Larew's will. It was probably spelled Standley as well.

[NI07393] Joe LaRue of Laneville TX has Lela born Jan 23, 1899 in Ohio, died Apr 22, 1990. If her parents were married in Kansas June 25, 1899, it's unlikely she was born in Ohio. Also, SSDI shows this Lela Devine with SS# issued in WV. More likely Lela daughter of Smith was born Apr 28, 1905 died Nov 1976 Oklahoma City OK. Her SS# was issued in OK.

[NI07396] Is there another Herbert Smith LaRue?

[NI07405] Picture in The Lima News, undated (my guess is 1952): Five generations -- The occasion of the recent commencement of Harrod high school brought together this five-generation group in the family of Mrs. Margaret Anspach. First row left to right are seen Mrs. Mayme Beall, 66, Harrod; Mrs. Margaret Anspach, 84, Harrod, who is holding Roger Dale Hunnaman, 5 months, Alger. Standing are Mrs. Janet Hunnaman, 18, Alger, left, and Mrs. Katherine Poleni, 37, Detroit, Mich.

The 1870 census gives Mary M. Zerbe, age 6, so she would have been born about 1864. 1900 census says she was born March 1869, age 31. If she was 84 when the above picture was taken, the March 1869 date would seem to be more accurate. But how could they say she was 6 in the 1870 census? Was she fudging on her age? (glw, 7/2002)

Next household is John's sister Clara and her husband Fred Smith, on Burch Ave.

[NI07408] Wingate GenForum post - James S. Moore on Nov 9, 1998:
Two brothers, Joseph and Smith Wingate, came from near Wilmington DE to KY in about 1803, Joseph settling in Lexington and Smith in Franklin County, where he died shortly after his arrival.
Smith married Susanna Capes (Delaware?) and they had a daughter and four sons:
Thomas S. m. Betsy Wooldridge
Cyrus m Millie Spicer
Isaac m Jane Sneed
Henry m Penelope Hart Anderson

Due to the similarity of names (Cyrus, Isaac, Henry), Smith and Joseph could possibly be brothers of Henry. Henry's son Isaac named a son Cyrus. Smith is a name that comes up later in the Shuster family and the LaRue family.

I've added some children - Cyrus, Catherine, Eli C. - based on their marriages in Tuscarawas Co OH in the 1820s. If they are not Henry's children, then it's possible Henry has a brother with him in Tuscarawas County. There is an Elizabeth Wingate who married Morgan Toland Feb 24, 1829, so she was born abt 1809. She doesn't fit in Henry's family - which leads to the possibility of another Wingate family in Tuscarawas County.

1820 Ohio census, Tuscarawas Co, Warren Twp, p. 171:
Henry Wingate, 2 males under 10, 3 males 16-25, 1 male 45> - no females, indicating Henry's wife died by this time.
Isaac Wingate, 1 male under 10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25

Resident Proprietors Lands in Tuscarawas County charged with taxes for the year 1816 does not list Henry Wingate, yet two of his children were married in Tuscarawas County in 1818. It's possible he came to the county in 1817.

[NI07412] (Sharon Phelps) Notes for ABRAHAM EVERSOLE:
Probably descendent of Jost (Joseph) Eversole of Swiss-German descent, who arrived at Philadelphia on the "Robert and Alice" on Sept. 3, 1739 and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It is unknown exactly how Abraham was related to Peter Eversole, husband of Mary's sister Catherine, but it is likely that they were brothers or cousins. The EVERSOHL FAMILY IN AMERICA, 1729-1937 by Roy G. Eversole and Mrs. F.H. Eversole, Jr. may shed more light on their relationship and heritage. (Jack Lines)

Notes on Peter Eversole - Peter was born in Maryland, his wife born in Virginia. (20) Peter's wife died at the age of 69, appr. 1835 (21). He emigrated to Ohio from Lancaster Co PA before son John was born in 1808. John was born on Baldwin's Run, Fairfield Co OH. Peter came to Hopewell Twp in 1814 and purchased the west half of section 1 and the NW quarter of section 12 (22). (Perry County, Ohio Hopewell and Madison Township Cemeteries vol. 2 p 12)
References, p 14:

[NI07413] (Sharon Phelps) According to Jack Lines, Catherine was probably married by the time her husband bought 199 acres of land on Patterson's Creek, Hampshire VA from her father (Balser) on March 24, 1794, and for sure was married by July 15, 1795 when a deed was recorded showing land being sold. It is unknown of what occurred between 1795 and 1814 when there is evidence that she and husband settled on land, sections 1 and 12 of the Hopewell Township, Perry Co. Ohio. On September 20, 1815, the land office in Washington DC confirms her husband's purchase of the NW 1/4 of section 12, T. 17, R 16 of the "Lands of the United States in the Territory Northwest of the Ohio and above the mouth of the Kentucky River." Biographies of Allen County, Ohio residents (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohallen/lemuel.htm):
Lemuel Eversole, a prominent agriculturist of Jackson township, residing on his farm in section 28, represents the sturdy, independent spirit of our American manhood which has overcome all obstacles encountered in the highways of life and has made our people honored and respected among the nations of the world. Left an orphan in early childhood, he has worked his way, unaided, to an independent position. He is one of the large land-owners of Allen County, having 360 acres of well improved land, upon which he makes his home. Mr. Eversole was born October 30, 1829, in Perry County, Ohio, and is a son of Peter and Rebecca (Snyder) Eversole, being one of seven children that grew to adult years, viz.: Eliza, Catherine, Francis, Nancy, Lemuel, Rebecca and Daniel.
When our subject was a child of two years, his parents moved to Sandusky County where they died four years later, in 1835, within a month of each other. Left alone in the world, Lemuel was taken into the home of his uncle, John Eversole, of Perry County, where he remained until he was 17. Educational opportunities were meager and consisted of a short term schooling each winter. He was apprenticed to learn the carpenter's trade, and for the three years thus engaged was given his clothes and $30. Within three months after his time had expired, he was on his way to California to seek his fortune in the gold fields. During the two years spent in mining and gold-washing, he did not make a fortune and decided to return to his native State. In the spring of 1852 he come to Allen County where he purchased a tract of wild land and secured work for the winter in the cabinet-shop of Musser & Winn, of Lima. For another six years he worked at his trade in the eastern part of the county, living frugally and saving his earnings so that he was able, by selling his first purchase, to buy his present property. In 1872 he built a large, substantial bank barn, and three years later his pleasant brick home, one of the most attractive in the county.
He was married July 8, 1855, to Sarah Nash, who was born July 11, 1837, and was a daughter of Thomas and Rebecca (Akins) Nash, early settlers of this county. They were the parents of 12 children, viz.: George W., Eliza J., wife of L. B. Harrod; Frank J., John E., Charles A., Elva C., Daniel B., Nettie B., Lemuel N., Aura D., Ralph and a child that died in infancy. Mr. Eversole is a member of the Christian Church. He is a Repubican and a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted as a 100 day man in May, 1864, in Company A, 151st Reg., Ohio Vol. Inf., under Captain King, of Delphos, with the rank of 2nd corporal. Mr. Eversole is a prominent Odd Fellow. He has served as township trustee and on the School Board and has never failed to put his shoulder to the wheel when the voice of duty called him.

[NI07423] Her parents were Thomas and Rebecca Nash; they came from Morgan County and their children were Mary, Lucretia and Sarah.

[NI07424] Copied from "History of Allen County" 1885, Monroe Township, p. 665/666:
DANIEL EVERSOLE, farmer, P.O. Columbus Grove, Putnam County, was born April 14, 1833, in Sandusky County, Ohio, son of Peter and Rebecca (Snyder) Eversole, natives of Perry County, Ohio, former a son of Peter and Nancy (Shelborn) Eversole; latter a daughter of Daniel Snyder. They had seven children: Eliza (wife of Elijah Helser, in Jackson Township, this county), Catherine (widow of John McCarthy, in Perry County, Ohio, with her family), Frances (wife of Henry Hersey, farmer in Noble County, Ind.), Nancy (deceased wife of Jacob Helser, also deceased, in Perry County, Ohio), Rebecca (wife of William Wolf in Fairfield County, Ohio), Lemuel (farmer in Jackson Township, this county), and Daniel. The parents dying when our subject was about three years of age, he was then taken back to his native county, where his uncle raised him, and for whom he worked, receiving through him a very meager education. At sixteen years of age Mr. Eversole was bound out for three years to learn blacksmithing, having two weeks each harvest in which he could work in order to earn spending money for the whole year. At nineteen years of age he went to Sandusky County, Ohio, where he followed his trade several years. In 1858 he moved to a piece of land where there was a small clearing. On January 10, 1857, Mr. Eversole was married to Malvina Tompkins, who was born November 25, 1837, near Lima, Ohio, daughter of Abel and Elizabeth (Heindel) Tompkins, who arrived at Lima, from Marion County, Ohio, on election day of President Jackson's second term. They had twelve children, eight of whom died in infancy. Those living are William H. (married in August, 1879, to Jane Searfoss, by whom he has two children, Earl and Charles), Francis M. (married in February, 1880, to Sadie Allen of Putnam County, Ohio, by whom he has one child, Mary M.), John H. and Walter H. William H. and Francis M. are farming along with their father. Mr. Eversole came to his present home in March 1866, where he has accumulated a large and well-kept farm of 320 acres. Mrs. Eversole's parents are still living, the father born March 14, 1799, the mother October 15, 1801. Of their fourteen children, two are living: Mrs. Eversole and Eleanor (wife of Theophilus Raines, by whom she has a family of five children). Mr. Eversole is a man of enterprise and prominence among people of the township in which he lives, having been chosen to fill the offices of trustee and treasurer, which latter he now holds. He was a member of Company D, One Hundred and Fifty-first Regiment Ohio National Guards, doing duty at Washington, D.C., resisting Gen. Early's attack on that city. He takes much interest in educational and religious matters. In politics he is a Republican. He and his family are members of the Christian Church.

[NI07428] History of Perry County, Biographical Sketches, pp 399-400:
EVERSOLE, John, farmer, Mount Perry post office; born in 1808, on Baldwin's run, Fairfield Co OH, son of Peter, a native of Lancaster Co PA, who emigrated to Ohio a few years prior to the birth of his son John. Peter came to Hopewell Twp, Perry Co, when John was six years old, and settled on sections one and twelve, in 1814. John has therefore lived longer on one farm than any other citizen of Hopewell Twp, except perhaps John Fullerton. He found near his new home only the wild beasts, but further away were the families of Plank, Schofield, Nye, Reichley, averaging perhaps one cabin to a section of land. Peter Eversole left a Bible to his son that is now 150 years old. It is printed in German, and is nearly two feet long by one foot in width, and about eight inches in thickness. He died at the age of 87, his wife having preceded him to the land of rest at the age of 79 years. They were German Baptists in belief. John was married at the age of 24 to Miss Jane Spencer, a daughter of Thomas, who was a brother of William Spencer, Sr., and uncle of William Jr., now the father of Henry Spencer of Reading twp. Thomas King, afterwards the first Representative of Perry county, was married to a sister of Thomas Spencer, and his wife, who reared a family of other people's children, chiefly because she was affectionate and benevolent, and partly because she had no children of her own, was the aunt of Mrs. Eversole. The children of John Eversole and his wife Jane Spencer were five living and two dead, Sarah Ellen at the age of 14 and George when an infant. Those living are Louisa, wife of William Williams III [married Feb 14, 1856], deceased, and now the wife of Mr. Van Fossen of Zanesville; John [S.], husband of Emma Cochrell, merchant; David [b Mar 16, 1838 d Sep 20, 1921], farmer, husband of Mary [married Mar 31, 1861, d Mar 26, 1886 Hopewell Twp], daughter of Abraham Bowser [David m2 1887 in Muskingum Co OH, Elizabeth Jane Lyle]; Peter [W., b Jul 27, 1849 Hopewell Twp d Sep 28, 1895 Perry Co], farmer, husband of Matilda [married Nov 10, 1871 Perry Co], sister of Samuel Cochran; and Emma Jane, wife of Frank Johnson, farmer, son of Harvey; all of whom have the post office address Mount Perry, Ohio. The mother of Mrs. Eversole was Margaret Spencer, who made herself useful as a midwife over 25 years, mounting her horse day or night , in storm or sunshine, asserting the right of her sex to that office, and died much regretted at the age of 65. William Spencer Sr. was a Universalist in belief, a faith that still lingers in the Spencer family. John Eversole and his wife are of the Christian Church. They are both readers of sacred books and patronize learning and the means of knowledge.
