[NI00001] George Lilly is first mentioned as being at Reading, Massachusetts in 1658. He drew 40 acres of land and was one of 59 who in 1667 owned a house. This land was situated on the north side of the Ipswich River. He also drew other lands in 1665. In 1666 he paid 18 shillings minister's rates. He was a schoolmaster at "Woodend," a village of Reading, in 1683. (Foundation of a Genealogy of the Northern Lilly Family, by Julius Whiting Lilly)
The writer has been unable to locate the country or place from whence our ancestor George Lilly came. There are strong circumstances pointing to one of two places, one in County Hertfordshire, England, and the other County Berwick, Scotland, perhaps in the vicinity of Polworth, where are recorded births of some of the name in the Parish Registers.
One Lilly tradition is, "That a remote ancestor died in France, during the Huguenot persecution, previous to 1600, leaving three sons who inherited a handsome property. That one settled in Ireland, one in England and the other in Scotland, and that two sons of the latter came to America, one of whom was our ancestor George Lilly, who first appears in Reading, Mass., in 1658. (Related by the late John Booth Lillie of Lodi, Calif., whose father was Turner Lilly who died in Vermont about 1800.)

9/2001: There's a website (http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/smgdavis/GATES/d1/i0003124.htm#i3122b)that gives George's lineage as follows: His father was William Lillie-Lilly born in England Nov 18, 1582. William's wife (unknown) was born in Berkshire, England. William's children: Jane, George born 1638, Robert born 1646.
William's father was John born in England in 1540. John's children: Alexander born Jan 19, 1579/80 England, William.
This tree follows the line of George's son Samuel who married Hannah Boutwell, their descendant Almira Lillie daughter of Roswell Lillie.

[NI00005] Samuel went to Sutton, Mass. about 1720, and afterward moved to Woodstock, Conn., and finally to Stafford, Conn. His brothers, Jonathan and David, settled in Sutton and died there. Samuel was a weaver by trade.

[NI00010] There is a Thomas Hawkes listed as a resident of Salem in 1648. Possibly this is Elizabeth's father.

[NI00028] Sarah was a member of the Windham Church, 1721, and was dismissed in 1735, to help form the Scotland Parish Church. (Lilly-Lilley-Lillie Family History p. 5)

[NI00030] About 1782 George moved his family to New York state. His son Joseph lived in Perry (Wyoming) NY proir to moving to Ohio.

[NI00044] Soldier in the Revolutionary War and was killed near its close.

[NI00046] From a Boston correspondent: "In 1813 David, Luther and Benjamin Lilly were among the first settlers of Albion, Orleans Co NY where in the same year they built the first saw-mill. [NI00093] Obadiah, son of Samuel (2) Lillie, was baptized July 17, 1733, at Stafford, Connecticut. He was a soldier in the revolution, from Longmeadow, Massachusetts, and the records show that he was paid a bounty by the town, April 4, 1784, for enlisting for three years in the Continental army. He gave his age as forty-five, but was a few years older; his height was five feet seven inches, his complexion and hair dark, and his occupation farming, according to the war records. (See Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution ix, p. 791). In 1790 he was living at Longmeadow, Massachusetts, and had no children in his family. His son Emmons, born 1764, was also in the revolution...

[NI00362] Bangs Burgess was a Revolutionary War soldier of conspicuous bravery. On the list of New York Pensioners of 1835. County: Rensselaer. Rank: Private, Capt. Isaac Pope's Company, Col. William Shepard's (4th) regt. Description of service: Massachusetts line. Placed on the pension roll: Jan 19, 1819. Commencement of pension: Apr 6, 1818. Age: 75.

By his first wife, Eunice Russell, he had four children, listed in the Burgess Genealogy on p. 36. He married again, Phebe Lillie, removed to New York State, and had twelve more children (none listed).

[NI00363] LDS submitter says Lotilla and Alice's parents are Ebenezer and Prudence Butts. There are two possible Ebenezers: Ebenezer Butt b Sep 13, 1747 Canterbury Twp, Windham CT, parents Josiah Butt & Elizabeth; Ebenezer Butt b Jun 10, 1742 Canterbury Twp, Windham CT, parents Nathaniel & Sarah Butt.

[NI00376] In the 1890 census, there were eight Lillie families living in Vermont. Turner Lillie served as a private in the Connecticut Line during the U.S. War of Independence. Why did the Lillie family leave Vermont? Possibly the reason was religion as the Lillie family were Quakers.
About 1801, the Lillie family left Vermont and came to Canada. They settled at Plum Hollow in Bastard Twp., Leeds County, Ontario. There is an old cemetery in this township that is known as the "Old Lillie Cemetery". It is believed that both Turner and Elinor Lillie were buried in this cemetery. Turner died in 1801. It's certainly possible that he married two women named Olive, but I think there was just one Olive.

[NI00664] A John Lillie is first mentioned in history as being at Wethersfield, Conn., in 1640. Wethersfield was first settled in 1634 by persons from Dorchester, Newton and Watertown, Mass. John's name appears about 1640 along with those of Thomas Standish, William Swain, Nathaniel Foster and others. John Lillie and wife had born to them at Wethersfield Ruth, born 1647, and Hannah, born 1650; so it would appear that John resided there from 1640 to 1650 at least. Owing to Church dissensions, several of the settlers removed to other places, some of them going back to Watertown, Mass., from whence they came. It is possible John is one of those who returned to Watertown. (Julius Whiting Lilly - check when this was written)
Benjamin Lillie says our first American ancestor came over on the Mayflower. Be this as it may, it is a matter of history that the vessel made several voyages after its first trip to America. (This story is handed down through Roswell Lillie who was born at Bethel, Vt., in 1783.)

We believe that John may have come on the Mayflower that was part of the Winthrop Fleet of 1630. The first five ships sailed April 8 from Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, and arrived at Salem June 13 and following days. The other half of the fleet sailed in May and arrived in July at various dates. Altogether they brought about 700 passengers.

A Ruth Lilly was recorded in the Journal of John Winthrop. "1667, Ruth Lilly, 19 yrs., Hartford, sister of J. Andrews' wife." (TAG, Vol. 4, No. 1, pages 54-55) She was probably a sister of Mary Lilly who married John Andrews.
John Andrews, born about 1616, in County Essex, England, married Mary Lilly, born about 1622, and had six children, born in Farmington, (later Hartford County), Connecticut: Abraham Andrews, b. 1640; Daniel Andrews, b. 1649-1650; Joseph Andrews, b. 1651-1652; Rachel Andrews, b. about 1653-1654; Stephen Andrews. b. about 1655-1656; and Benjamin Andrews, b. 1659. John Andrews died in 1681, and Mary (Lilly) Andrews died in 1694.

[NI00708] (VII) Robert Burns, son of Obadiah (2) Lillie, was born at Bethel, Vermont, October 18, 1839, and died at Montpelier, Vermont, January 31, 1911. He received his early education in the public schools, and attended college in Ohio and the University of Vermont at Burlington. He enlisted in Company E, Fourth Regiment Vermont Volunteer Infantry, and served throughout the civil war in the Army of the Potomac. He took part in many battles and skirmishes, and was wounded in the battle of the Wilderness. He was a painter by trade, and also a farmer. For many years he was a teacher in the public schools of Vermont. He lived in Essex Center and Winooski, Vermont, and for eight years at Hanover, New Hampshire. From 1887 until he died he was a resident of Montpelier, Vermont. Mr. Lillie married Josephine Kellogg, of Worcester, Vermont; she was born in 1846, and died in October, 1903. Children: Edith, married John Paddleford, and had two children--Robert and Clifton; Dean Kellogg, mentioned below. (New England Families Genealogical and Memorial: Third Series, Volume IV, p. 1956)

[NI00712] (VIII) Dean Kellogg Lillie, son of Robert Burns Lillie, was born at Winooski, Vermont, April 15, 1876. When a child he went to Hanover, New Hampshire, with his parents, and attended the public schools there until he was ten years old. He lived one year in Worcester, Vermont, and then came to Montpelier, where he was a student in the high school one year and in the Montpelier Seminary one year. He then learned the trade of stone-cutting in the employ of R. M. Fraser, of Montpelier, and afterward worked as a journeyman for the firm of Fraser & Broadfoot until 1903, when he started in the granite business on his own account. His headquarters were near the railroad station in Montpelier. He soon required larger quarters for his business, and bought the Wetmore & Morse plant in Montpelier. After three years in this location, the business was moved to the present location on Smith street, in Barre, Vermont, and the Wetmore & Morse plant was sold to Jellyman & Jones. At this time the present title, The Lillie Granite Company, was adopted. The plant of the company is thoroughly modern in equipment, and produces all kinds of monuments and tombstones. The company has a large wholesale trade in granite monuments in all parts of the country, and in addition to the Vermont granite have imported Scotch granite for use in its business. Mr. Lillie is sole owner and manager, and is well known in the granite and quarry business of the country. His success in business has been due to his own ability and exertions, his excellent training and knowledge of his trade. Mr. Lillie's chief diversion is afforded by his horses, of which he is the owner of some of the fastest and most valuable in the city. He is president of the Gentlemen's Driving Club, and well known and popular among the horsemen of the state. He is a member of Montpelier Lodge, No. 924, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, of Montpelier. In politics he is an Independent.

He married, August 7, 1895, Bessie Belknap, of Berlin, Vermont, daughter of John Q. A. and Susan (Richardson) Belknap. Children: Robert, died in infancy; Ralph Belknap, born April 11, 1898; Della Edith, born April 10, 1899; Norman Dean, born March 7, 1901; Francis Jason, born November 22, 1903. Roger Lillie, science teacher at Ada high school, has received an appointment to attend the University of Michigan institute for a year of graduate study starting next fall, announces Supt. E. A. VanAtta. The appointment provides living expenses, tuition and books, and is one of 50 granted by the university. The Michigan institute is one of 16 universities throughout the United States sponsored by the National Science foundation.

[NI00744] Wick, where Raymond was born, was basically just a railroad stop.

Raymond graduated from Perry High School in 1916; his father was working at a greenhouse there.

In Sept. 1930 when Dad was born, Raymond was teaching (or superintendent?) at Buckland school, Auglaize Co, Logan Twp. The census for that year was taken on April 17, 1930, and at that time the family was living in Wickliffe at 545 Lloyd Road.

In the summer of 1939, Raymond was between jobs - had just finished superintendent at Pierpont schools and was going to be superintendent of Gustavus schools. The family stayed for the summer at "Uncle Bob's" (Vera's brother Bob Baker) on East 118th Street in Cleveland. Raymond worked for the summer at a hotel on East 105th Street.

The nice family picture (of Raymond and Vera and their five children) was taken at Uncle Bob's house, as well as the picture of Virgil, Vera and Bob, and the picture of Zelda and Virgil. Virgil and Zelda had come up from Steubenville to visit.

[NI00745] Story has it that, when Vera graduated from Bellaire High School, her Aunt Bert attended the commencement. Afterwards, Aunt Bert was quoted as saying, "No niece of mine is going to live where you can't see the sun shine!" (Bellaire is an industrial city with factories and smog.) So she took Vera with her to live in Cleveland. Through her cousins who were attending Baldwin Wallace College (Ernie and Bill Boggs), Vera met Raymond. They were married December 29, 1923. --taken from The Lillie Reunion News, June 9, 1998, commemorating the 100th birthdays of Raymond J. Lillie (born July 22, 1898) and Vera Clara Baker (born May 14, 1898).

After Grandpa Raymond Lillie died in 1946, Grandma Vera moved to Ashtabula County, Ohio where her father-in-law, Jay Lillie, and his second wife Anna lived. She settled in Jefferson, in a small green house where my family and our cousins visited often until her death in 1965.

In Grandma's sewing circle: Leonard Lillie's mother (Belle Olin Lillie 1907-1986, wife of Howard), Leah Partch who died last fall (2001), Marilla Lewis Wright (1905-2002). (noted March 2002, in conversations with my Dad) One of Marilla's sons, Eber Wright, came to the 50th anniversary party for Mom and Dad in Feb. 2003. He was there with Lois (Marcy) Redmond, who is the youngest of Iva Belle (Lillie) Marcy's children.

The previous household is Justus Williams, age 49, born NY, and his wife Catherine, 45, born Ohio. I'm going to guess that these are Miranda's parents - how didn't I see this before? 1860 census confirms this!

The following account of the life of Joseph Lillie, grandson of Joseph and Lotilla Lillie, written by his oldest son, C.J. Lillie and incorporated into the Family Reunion Records of the Lillie Family, Aug. 7, 1919:
Joseph Lillie was the son of George and Jerusha Lillie. He was born in Monroe Township on April 13, 1841. He received his education at the district school, and later followed farming.
On the third day of August 1861, he enlisted in the Second Ohio Battery. He served three years, and received his honorable discharge the 19th of August 1864.
He later learned the carpenter trade, which he followed during the remainder of his active life.
He was married on the 18th of September 1864, to Coralyn A. Searls, who died Feb17, 1866.
He was married again October 3rd, 1867 to Miranda Williams. He with his family drove through to Alabama, starting from Monroe June 11, 1878, taking six weeks for the trip. After five years in the south he returned to Monroe with his family where he lived for several years, moving from there to Pierpont, where he resided until his death on June 16, 1903. At the time of his death he was sixty-two years, two months and two days old.

FUNERAL OF THE LATE MRS. MIRANDA LILLIE
The funeral of Mrs. Miranda Lillie was held at the home of Mr. Chas. Marcy on the State line, Sunday at 1 p. m., conducted by Rev. R. E. Benjamin. Interment in the Pierpont cemetery.
Mrs. Lillie had just returned from a visit to her children in Conneaut. She spent Christmas day at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. H. Leonard, where several of her relatives and friends went to make joyous the occasion. She complained of having contracted a cold when she returned to the home of her daughter, with whom she lived. Her condition, however, was not thought serious. She ate supper with the family Thursday evening and went to bed in the best of spirits. But when her daughter went to call her the next morning it was found she had passed without a struggle from the sleep of a nature to that of death. She was a member of the Congregational church of Pierpont. She was dearly loved by all who knew her. She leaves to mourn her death, eight children, five girls and three boys, several grandchildren, one brother and a host of friends.

CONNEAUT MAN WANTS DIVORCE
Clyde J. Lillie Alleges That His Wife Has Frequented Saloons and "Red Light" House.
Jefferson, Nov. 27. -- Clyde J. Lillie has commenced divorce proceedings against Emma May Lillie, alleging that the wife has on various occasions frequented saloons in the company of other men. He also relates that the defendant was in a house of ill repute at Conneaut which was raided by the police on July 28, 1907.
On the seventeenth day of this month she left him, he says, and that he has reason to believe she left in the company of other men. R. E. Mygatt is his attorney. (newspaper clipping from the farm book of Alice Estelle Garlock Harvey)

After his divorce from Emma, Clyde Lillie married Nellie Graham. She was the widow of Grant Graham, who was a brother of Emma Graham, my great-grandmother. The 1900 census has Grant & Nellie with their son Oakley listed just a few households from Jay & Emma. Clyde & Nellie's marriage is recorded in the 1909 minutes of the Lillie reunion, so Grant must have died between 1900 and 1909.

(Mary Stack data on ancestry.com) Uriah Hibbard born April 23, 1753 Windham Co CT, died 1819 Erie Co NY, m1 Hannah Foster, m2 Hannah Scoville. Uriah was in the Conn. Militia from the commencement to the close of the Revolutionary War. Immediately after his second marriage he removed to Orwell, Vt. About 1804 he removed from Vt. to Western N.Y. with his entire family, and settled in Burton(?), Erie Co., where he resided until his death. Where is Burton, NY? There is no town called Burton in Erie Co. that we have found.
Uriah & Hannah Foster had Luther Hibbard, born 1781 Windham Co CT, died 1850 Iowa. This could be the Luther Hibbard in the 1830 Chautauqua NY census. (But there is a Daniel Hibbard with a son Luther, so probably not Luther son of Uriah.)
Uriah & Hannah Scoville had Henry Hibbard born Nov 12, 1791 Orwell VT. Per Philip S. Hibbard's database: His wife and seven of his children died previous to 1857. At that time he was residing at Conneaut, Ohio. A grandson one and one-half years old was his only descendant bearing the name of Hibbard. This is probably the Henry Hibbard in the 1840 Monroe OH census.

Daniel Hibbard born 1765 Greenwich CT, son of Jonathan Hibbard (born Oct 23, 1709 Windham CT, md. Sarah), md. Bethiah Gray who died 1854: son Luther born 1798 Chenango Co NY, died Feb 19, 1843, md. Laura Clark.

[NI00780] It's possible she was a sister of Dr. Stephen Griggs Holbrook, born May 21, 1798 in Connecticut. Stephen's family is in the 1850 Ohio census for Ashtabula Co, Monroe (roll 659), p. 292b, taken Aug. 10. Stephen's father was Joseph Holbrook born April 21, 1772 Tolland CT, died abt 1813; his mother was Martha Griggs. Joseph's parents were Elias Holbrook born 1740 and Elizabeth Benton born Feb 21, 1746/47 Tolland CT.

The entertainment consisted in visiting, instrumental and vocal music, a sumptuous dinner and automobile rides. Those who enjoyed the rides were indebted to a son-in-law of Mr. Northway, who was there from Ashtabula.

GEORGE AUSTIN LILLIE DIED IN MONROE SUNDAY
George Austin Lillie, known familiarly by many people in Conneaut and Monroe as "Uncle Aut," died Sunday morning at 5:30 at the home of Theron Johnson in Monroe, where he had made his home for several years. He was 84 years of age, and his death was due to the infirmities of age. The funeral will be held at the home of Mr. Johnson at 11:30 Tuesday and at the church at Monroe Center at 12:30 Standard time.

Richard Samuel Lillie, 83, of State Road, died early Sunday morning at his home as the result of a house fire.
Mr. Lillie was born March 31, 1915, in Ashtabula, the son of Roy and Alta Lillie.
Before retirement, he worked as a carpenter out of the Cleveland union hall. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Kingsville, and the Sheffield Grange.
Survivors include his stepmother, Helen Lillie of Monroe Township; a son, Richard D. Lillie of Monroe Township; a daughter, Roberta Hand of Saline, Mich.; a sister, Mary Jane Sheneman of Monroe Township; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Maxine.
Service is 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Guerriero Kingsville Funeral Home, 6280 S. Main St., North Kingsville. The Rev. Jerry Webb will officiate. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, Thursday at the convenience of the family.
Calling hours are 6 p.m. Wednesday until time of service.

On Friday, Dec. 2, occurred the death of Mrs. H. N. Farr, an estimable resident of Denmark.
Mrs. Farr was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Lillie, and was born in Sheffield township in 1860. Bereft of her mother at the age of 17, she at once assumed the duties of the mother in the home and sought to fill the place left vacant by her death. She became the wife of Harry N. Farr in 1884 and the husband and three children are left to mourn her departure. The children are Mrs. Bernice Johnson, who resides in Ashtabula, Walter Farr of Denmark and Hazel, about 12 years of age. Two brothers, Orson Lillie and S. S. Lillie, of Sheffield - and one sister, Mrs. Dell Brainard, of Ashtabula, also survive.
At an early age she became a member of the free Baptist church at Sheffield, and her life was that of a consistent Christian woman, loved and honored by all who knew her and most highly by those who knew her best. To the writer, hers seems the ideal life of woman - not perhaps so accomplished in what may be considered the finer arts of her sex - but a faithful friend, a loving wife and mother and a true Christian.
The funeral services were held at Sheffield church Sunday afternoon and were attended by a large company of friends and neighbors who had known her in life and sought to show once more their love for her. A second email, Sept. 7, 1901: I know that Ben G. was born to Jonathan G. and his second wife Sarah Rohrer. He married Olive 11/5/1895 they had 4 children. And you seem to know their names. He married Marilda Jane Myers Stauffer 6/29/1895. They had 2 children, Joseph and David. She died 3/4/1918. And Ben married Ella DeMeyer 10/14/1918. Ben's daughter Sarah married Carl McMillen. So that would be her in the picture Glenna has. I know that Jonathan was born in Warren County, and moved to Putnam County when he was 11. So looks as if Ben was born and raised in Putnam County. I know that JG was ordained a Baptist minister in Jan 1862. The Sugar Creek Church was south of Rimer and 2.5 miles due east from his farm.

Lima News, Friday, June 20, 1958 -- Services Saturday for Guy LaRue, 75
Funeral services for Guy LaRue, 75, Rt. 2, Lafayette, will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Harrod Congregational Christian church, the Rev. Willard Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Lafayette cemetery.
Friends may call at the residence, two miles west of Harrod on Clum road, until Saturday noon when the body will be removed to the church to lie in state one hour before the service. Hanson funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. LaRue died Thursday morning in Lima Memorial Hospital. In failing health for two years, he was seriously ill for two months.
A native of Jackson township, he was born Mar. 2, 1882, a son of William and Lucinda LaRue. Mr. LaRue taught school for ten years and had served on the Auglaize township school board for sixteen years. Later he became well known as one of the area's progressive farmers, specializing in Jersey cattle. He was long a Sunday school teacher in the Cong. Christian church.
He was married to Ethel Heath in 1913 who survives with five children; two sons, Weldon of Elida and Preston of Rt. 2, Lafayette; three daughters, Mrs. Hope Beery, Waterville; Mrs. Opal Harvey, Rt. 1, Harrod; Mrs. Norma Lillie, Ada; ten grandchildren. One daughter preceded him.
He leaves two brothers, Ira LaRue of Clyde and Otis LaRue of Lima; two sisters, Mrs. Eva Arnold and Mrs. Hettie Younkman, both of Beaverdam.

She was born Nov. 28, 1890, in Lafayette, the daughter of William and Amanda Zerbe Heath. On March 19, 1913, she married Guy S. LaRue, who died June 20, 1957.
Mrs. LaRue was a member of the Happy Hour Club [a farm women's club] and Laugh Yette Club. She was a former member of Greely Bible Chapel Church.
Survivors include two sons, Weldon LaRue of Elida and Preston LaRue of Harrod; 3 daughters, Hope Kaliher of Lima, Opal Harvey of Harrod, and Mrs. Roger (Norma) Lillie of Ashtabula; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Lewis Memorial Chapel of Chiles and Sons-Laman, Rev. Glenn Kyler officiating. Burial will be in Lafayette Cemetery.

Our "Remember When" editor is getting all the fan mail these days. But since she can only talk in past tense, we took this one off her hands.
Mrs. Guy LaRue of Lafayette writes about an interesting experience of the past:
It will soon be July 19th, and I will always "remember when" just eight years ago on Wednesday, July 19th, 1950, when I was in Lima shopping, and had come to my last errand. Not many farm families owned their own food freezers eight years ago, and so I was on my way to the Food Freezer Locker Service on N. Elizabeth Street to get the weekly meat supply for the family. It was storming some, and as I parked my car and started toward the Locker, I looked up north and saw board, clothing and debris sailing high in the air. I proceeded into the building, where patrons were laughing and talking. I said, "Did you folks know it was storming outside?" I saw boards and things flying way up high in the sky." But they were too unconcerned to look out or investigate. They probably did not know it until they reached home or read it in the Thursday newspaper, which I have kept for eight years, with all the pictures and whole pages showing the disaster that hit west and north Lima.
This was the tornado that did a $1,500,000 damage to Lima, and 30 were injured and scores homeless. The Red Cross, National Guard, police and firemen and many others were brought into service. Homes were demolished, moved off their foundations and trees were uprooted. This same tornado struck a mile southwest of Beaverdam on Rt. 25, when 4 cows and 4 sows were killed when the barn of Home Weaver collapsed. A friend of ours told us it struck also east of Beaverdam, but we have always thought it could not have been the same one, as motorists were getting out of their cars and crawling in the ditches at 6 p.m. while Lima was hit at 4:50 p.m. There is a difference of opinion there.
I guess the reason I have been interested in this is that on June 8th, 1924, a cyclone visited us at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning and our barn collapsed on Clum Rd., 2 miles west of Harrod, then it dipped and took the barn of Nora Blair on Rt. 30.
Thanks for the note, Mrs. Larue. Here's hoping July 19, 1958 is a bit more pleasant for us all.

Preston J. LaRue, 77, died at 6:20 p.m. Oct. 14, 1995, at Lima Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born Sept. 12, 1918, in Allen County to Guy Samuel and Ethel Floy Heath LaRue. On May 3, 1957, he married Elsie E. Hefner, who died Sept. 29, 1992.
Mr. LaRue was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Harrod Christian Church, Ohio Farmers Union and the Allen County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include a brother, Weldon LaRue of Lima; and three sisters, Hope Kaliher of Lima, Opal Harvey of Harrod and Norma Lillie of Ashtabula. He was preceded in death by a sister, Margie LaRue.
Services will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Lewis Memorial Chapel of Chiles and Sons-Laman Funeral Homes. The Rev. Leonard Spacht will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Eighty-First Anniversary Marked With Gathering Of Friends And Relatives At Community Park, LaFayette.
Mr. William LaRue, of Ada, celebrated his 81st birthday in the form of a reunion at Community Park, LaFayette, recently. Mr. LaRue's two living brothers, Obed and Newton LaRue and their families motored from Texas to be present at the affair.
A delicious dinner was served at noon, bowls of roses in red and crimson forming the centerpieces, while the cover of the host was marked with a birthday cake holding 81 miniature flags.
After the dinner a social time was enjoyed, the older folks indulging in reminiscences, while the children enjoyed various games and contests. Later a delightful program was given with Mr. Robert Baker acting as chairman.
"Blest Be the Tie that Binds" was sung as the opening number and was followed by invocation by Rev. Herrier of Beaverdam; Mr. Guy LaRue gave the welcome address and Miss Anna LaRue, a reading. A number was then sung by a male chorus including Messrs. Ira, Ralph and Olan LaRue, John and Bob Augsburger, Norval, Victor and Harold LaRue, Will, Clair and Daniel Younkman, Roy, Merrill and Gail Arnold, Jack Pugh and Bob Hullinger.
A piano duet was given by Misses Mary Mowery and Marie LaRue; talk, Mr. William LaRue; solo, Mrs. Helen Baker; reading, Gertrude LaRue; solo, Robert LaRue; piano solo, Olive LaRue; selection, male chorus; tenor solo, Clair Younkman; talk by Mr. J. W. Lippincott; duet, "Don't Forget the Old Folks," Mrs. J. H. Baker, Mr. Ira LaRue; solo, Miss Beulah Younkman; song, "My Grandfather's Farm," sung by grandsons Olan and Ralph LaRue, Clair and Daniel Younkman, Roy, Merrill and Gail Arnold, Victor and Harold LaRue, Bob Augsburger and Bob Baker; song, "God Be With You Till We Meet Again," benediction by Mr. J. W. Lippincott.
More than 175 relatives, neighbors and friends were present for the affair including the children of Mr. LaRue, their wives and husbands, forty-three grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Lima News, Oct. 5, 1926: WILLIAM A. LARUE, 81, WAR VETERAN, IS DEAD
William A. LaRue, 81, of Ada, Civil war veteran, died Monday at St. Rita's hospital following a six weeks' illness from kidney trouble. He was the father of Mrs. J.H. Baker, 430 N. Washington-st.
Besides Mrs. Baker, he leaves his widow; three other daughters, Mrs. William Arnold and Mrs. John Augsburger, Ada, Mrs. William Younkman, Beaverdam, and five sons, Edward, Ira, Guy and Norval, Ada, and Otis, Harrod. Two brothers, Obus and Newton, residing in Texas, 43 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, also are left.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Methodist church in Ada.

[NI01060] Allen County OH 1880 Atlas has in Jackson Twp an Elijah Helser, James G. Helser and J.W. Helser, Elijah has the biggest plot, so we're thinking he may be father of the other two. There is another Elijah Helser in Auglaize Twp.
At first we thought one of these might be Lucinda's father, but the 1850 Perry County OH census showed that Jacob and Nancy were her parents.
The Elijah in Jackson Twp is Lucinda's 1st cousin once removed. James G. Helser is his son (Lucinda's 2nd cousin). I haven't found J.W. Helser yet, but most likely he is another son of Elijah's.

[NI01061] Levi L. Larue was a private in Co. F, regiment 151st O.N.G., enlisted May 1864, discharged Sept. 1864.

Levi was a member of the Ames Chapel, Methodist Episcopal Church in Liberty Twp, Hardin Co. He was the superintendent of the sabbath classes appr. 1880-1883. In the History of Hardin County in the section on churches, his name is listed erroneously as Levi Larne.

The marriage record for Levi L. and Sarah Shuster was obviously typed from handwritten documents, as Levi's name is given as Levi SARM. This is reasonable given that the script capital L looked a lot like capital S, and a written "ue" could easily be mistaken for an "m."

Because "Loofberry" is a rather unusual name, I have explored the possibility that it is a family name - possibly Nancy Emerson's mother was a Loofberry. The name was generally "Loofborough" but I found it spelled "Loofberry" in Ohio. Have been unable to find a connection but intend to keep looking.
In this pursuit: There is a Jonathan Loofborrow in Perry Co OH in 1819 who married Barbara Sherg, May 18, 1819.

>Since Levi wasn't born until 1821, the male 10-16 is possibly a farm laborer. That there are two daughters under 10 listed would imply that Obed and Nancy married before 1820. It also means there was another daughter that Olan doesn't include in his history. She probably died young as well. I estimate their marriage as 1818 based on this. Also, since the known daughter is buried with Obed and Nancy in the Lafayette cemetery, the 2nd daughter probably died while they were still in Licking Co. and is probably buried there. Do we know when Obed and Nancy moved to Allen Co?

Listed in the same place was Abel Emerson 0-0-0-1-0-1 / 0-1-1-0-0 / 0-1 (1 male 16-26, 1 male 45 and over; 1 female 10-16, 1 female 16-26). Abel is possibly related to Nancy.

Look for a marriage record for Obed and Nancy in Licking Co OH.

Nancy was 38 in 1820 when she married Obed. It's possible that she was married before, and that Emerson was her married name not her maiden name.

[NI01078] From the Lillie Reunion record, August 4, 1921: What proved in some respects the saddest reunion held by the Lillie family occurred on the 4th of August, 1921, at the home of Mrs. Eva Lillie on the State Line road. In the planning and preparation for this event, M.B. Lillie, ever loyal to these family gatherings, had taken an active interest. But before the day came he was stricken with pneumonia, and at the time of the reunion he lay in a critical condition. Almost before the gathering dispersed he passed on to the haven of rest where sickness and suffering are unknown. It could not be but that a shadow should rest upon the company in the knowledge of his condition and all felt and expressed the deepest sympathy.

[NI01106] I believe this is Cornelia Rowe, daughter of Eli Rowe. Eli's family is listed on p. 103b of the 1850 PA census for Crawford Co, Conneaut Twp, just a few pages from the family of George & Jerusha Lillie.

Two households after George & Jerusha (p. 101b), there is a Cornelia Rowe, age 11, in the household of John & Eliza Adams. It's probable this is the same Cornelia Rowe listed on p. 103b, just enumerated twice.
